Celtic Oak

Artist statement:
Coming from a background of Scotch/Irish/German lineage and raised in the Catholic church, I have always wondered at the beauty of illuminated manuscripts especially the book of Kells. Tracing this people through the mist of time in the ancient world of the Celts one finds a people so integrated into the ancient fabric of European, Mediterranean, and South Asian culture that their blood runs in the veins of many peoples. Symbols of that ancient time, the tree and knotwork are combined in this embroidery. The tree was sacred because its roots lay in the underworld, its trunk in the Earth world, and its branches reached into the sky world. I live in the shadow of wild oaks and enjoy their presence throughout the year. Knotwork, a favorite of the Celts, is symbolic because it has no beginning and no end.
